”All the things that used to be inside of me… now they’re all outside.”Terrifyingly ambiguous, mesmerizing and a film so confident in all of it’s decisions with one of my favorite film character dynamics between Mamiya and Takabe. Unbelievably inspiring from the first frame to the very last, the editing, the score, that acting!! speechless every time I revisit it. Wish I could write a whole ass essay about how much I adore this film but words fail me. Masterpiece; every rewatch more rewarding than the last, more things to pick up, slight answers and even more questions.
I read some time ago someone describing the way that the camera moves (or at times doesn’t) in this film as part of the “evil” of the film, and in this rewatch, I couldn’t agree more. The way that it moves when specific characters do an action, how it cuts when we, the audience put information together with Takabe, the otherworldy almost Eldrich presentation of Mamiya and Hagiwara’s bewitching performance of the character, everything comes together to create an experience that’s gonna stay with the audience forever. Kurosawa crafted a masterpiece with this, holy.
