Before Midnight
What I love about these movies is the ability to test your perspective on love. Is that ending hopeful or painfully realistic? It is up to the viewer to decide, but what is here is a mature meditation on how love grows, changes, and morphs into something unrecognizable. With the past two movies holding such a dreamy perspective on love, I think the third entry maintains that romanticism, but in a much more melancholic way. Love is tolerance, and that last scene really exemplifies this couple's ability to tolerate each other. Does love prevail? That is up to you to decide, and leaving it off on such an ambiguous note sort of represents this trilogy's ethos.
