Saving Private Ryan

This film is probably the best war film of all time. It certainly has the best opening sequence of any film I've ever seen, and doesn't get any worse of the next 2 1/2 hours. The journey that the unit go on as characters, especially Miller and Upham, is excellently written and amazingly portrayed by the actors. This film never pulls punches when exploring the horrors of war, and there aren't many scenes in which the characters are actually happy. This and the end leaving all but two characters dead really prevents this from even slightly glorifying war at any time.
