Election
How have I not watched this movie before? The screenplay is brilliant & the comedy is sharp as hell. Satire at its best.
Both Matthew Broderick and Reece Witherspoon absolutely kill their roles! Broderick is hilarious in his portrayal of a man in what I can only assume is a drastic midlife crisis as his life spirals out of his own hands! (even if it made me hate Matthew Broderick a lot) Reece plays the overachieving & slightly annoying character so brilliantly, from this to Madeline in BLL I could watch her be this way for days on repeat!
The screen play was brilliantly whitty and has great plant/payoff throughout (the pepsi & the school janitor to name 2)! The voiceover from all the characters worked really well & really helped move the narrative along! My only fault with it was the way it wrapped up the story with the final flash forwards feeling a little unnecessary (even if they were funny!)
Tracey Flick was such an interesting character, someone who despite her selfassurance and confidence is clearly very vulnerable. The film also tackled Tammy’s sexuality in an interesting way, creating comedy while also taking on the topic head on, not shying away from the confusion of sexuality in your teenage years! (The ‘straighten you out’ line is honestly brilliant)
At times the editing transitions and the cinematography weren’t exactly to my taste but I am gonna take them as a mixture of the satire and a product of the time! This isn’t to say that all of it was that way, only parts of the film!
This may have made it as my new ‘Watch on election night’ movie! Shame it’s taken me 21 years to notice it!
