‘At some point you gotta decide for yourself who you gonna be’
I couldn’t have picked a better first cinematic experience post pandemic.
So, when this movie was released & I saw it in the cinemas I was a closeted 18 year old, working dead end job and had no clue what to do with my life. This film not only inspired me to make the move; go and study my passion, but it became a reminder that I didn’t need to fit into any specific ‘role’ or be who everyone expected me to be, to be myself.
I can’t pretend I’ve got a life anything near to the one Chiron leads. I don’t live in anywhere remotely close to this setting but these characters, this story, this filmmaking is powerful.
I could talk about the performances, Barry Jenkins’ direction, the cinematography but sometimes they’re all just parts of a beautiful puzzle. I’m not gonna pretend I am completely myself yet but without this film, I really don’t think the journey would have even started.
This is the power of cinema.
Poetic, Painful, Beautiful & Inspiring
