The Broken Circle Breakdown
i don’t think i’ve ever seen a film that has made me cry every 10 minutes. this film is raw, emotional, destructive, and devastating but it is so beautiful. after losing someone dear to me only 2 1/2 months ago, i was able to recognize and relate to their behaviors and emotions more than i’d like to. it is extremely difficult to grieve someone that is still alive and even harder to cope with that loss when they’re actually gone. this movie depicted grief as it is, overwhelming, frustrating, debilitating. there’s no guideline on how to grieve and navigate life afterwards. elise and didier are prime examples of how people handle their grief differently. they also showed that in life-changing moments, such as this, you lash out on the ones you love most. this film tackles different religious beliefs and its influence on relationships and politics. i could feel the intensity of their passion and love as much as their heartbreak and anger so kudos to the actors. i decided to watch this unaware of the plot because i wanted to indulge in more of felix van groeningen’s films. he is such an incredible director and after this movie he has secured a spot in my top 3 directors. to capture something so gut-wrenchingly intimate without it feeling unnatural and unrealistic is talent.
