Solaris
Tarkovsky uses Solaris to discuss human nature at its core. His message is profound and accurate, and dives deep into our inherent and natural flaws. The emotion which exudes from Kris about Hari exemplifies his fragility and connection to his past, and how humanity is not and will never be perfect.
The writing is superb and illustrates the struggles of the characters as they go through their troubles. The pacing is extremely slow, which serves the purpose of the film perfectly. The story is great, but what puts this film over the top is the way the story is told, from the cinematography to the deep conversations to the ability to convey a scene’s meaning without the use of words. The ending is uniquely sad and provokes deeper thought even after the film is long over.
