The ThingJesse9.7· June 6, 2025FollowThis was genuinely fantastic. I attempted to watch jaws but for some reason it kept freezing so this was my second option. I was vaguely aware of this film but didn’t really know much about it and oh boy was it incredible. I’m quite a fan of this genre, the sci-fi horror even though I’ve not seen too much from it. To my knowledge I think maybe only the alien franchise. I’ll definitely see about watching more of this type because it’s really enjoyable. The opening was really intriguing and to think that the film could’ve been avoided if those Norwegians could shoot better. The setting in itself is so eerie and desolate which really adds to the great atmosphere this film held. The whole ‘no one for miles’ and ‘lack of contact’ with others sets the tone really well. The thing coming in within a dog is so cool because you wouldn’t suspect it and I really didn’t. That scene of the dogs face breaking open and that whole sequence was genuinely so disturbing. I put my jumper over my face, my stomach dropped. It was so unsettling. The Thing is so cool due to it acting as a copycat but it’s so freaky when it’s not an exact copy. I really enjoyed how no one could be trusted and seeing how each person gradually adopted that way of thinking first starting with Blair and his whole crash out. I really liked it because he wanted to preserve the human race and didn’t want them to be able to let it leave. This film was fantastic with raising tension, it was tense throughout and I’m still stressed from it. The music in this film was also fantastic, it really made it so much more tense. Also the scenes of silence were sexy, especially just of empty rooms because you just felt something was off. The atmosphere of this film was spectacular, genuinely great. It was beautifully shot and I love how well it holds up for today. The thing was so horrific, I think maybe the worst form it took was that head spider thing. The like practical effects or whatever you’d call it were fantastic for 1982. The whole film was genuinely really well done. That blood test scene was also fantastic, so insanely tense and finding out that Clark wasn’t even the thing was unfortunate because I quite liked him. There was certain worry during the scene that the test wouldn’t work and then it scared me when it did. So incredible. The ending was so good, the feeling of dread and uncertainty because you don’t know if one of them is the thing or not and then it just ends. It’s so good, I was honestly so dead set on my prediction that it would end with MacReady being the last one and killing himself to end it and I really liked how I was wrong. The end makes you think and really try to piece together who it could be. Also I literally knew Childs was Keith David based only on the voice. I didn’t recognise him. So cool to see him. I genuinely love this film, holds up fantastic still and was so incredible. Such an enjoyable watch and I can see myself getting people to rewatch with me to see their reactions. I feel like I didn’t talk about a whole lot but I’m so tired. Genuinely fantastic film. Such an amazing watch. “Nobody… nobody trusts anybody now”CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the app
