Bruiser
Bruiser was a fantastic artistic approach to the exploration of toxic masulinity. A fight between two deeply flawed but sympathetic men who honestly just need some therapy over a young boy they both want to claim ownership over. I love the use of static and kinetic shots to show the differences between the men and the way those shots break down more and more as Darious' emotional future is put more and more into jeopardy. Malcolm and Porter worry more about their own troubling past than whats best for their son, leading to a boiling point where both of their more toxic sides are exposed. Ultimately, it's the lessons his mother taught him that allow Darious to leave the men behind, breaking the cycle to form his own person.
This all works because of incredible performances and a confident hand at the director's chair. Hard to believe this was his first feature film with how strong it is. Absolutely flawless in my eyes.
