Blow Out
I’m still making my way through Brian De Palma’s filmography and while I still have plenty of work to go, I have no problem declaring this as one of his absolute masterpieces. He’s so dedicated to making these line-toeing exercises of exploitation that almost insinuate their own fabrication in story form, trading off with a pure technical mastery that’s so overtly on display. You’d be hard pressed to find a movie working harder to let you know that it’s being completely manipulated by one all seeing freak, a voyeur who’s dead set on letting you know what fascinates him because he’s insisting that it also does the same to you the viewer. He’s dead right.
The colors, that unbelievable score and a camera that’s gliding around Philadelphia as you get hit with the fully array of tricks from a craftsman of the highest order. Form and feeling are inseparable when dealing with a work of art like this. The 4K transfer is pure eye candy, what a picture.
