Collateral
Decided to fire up this absolute vibe session once more after seeing Austin Butler is rumored to be training to play a younger version of Chris (Val Kilmer’s Character) from Heat and as a certified Mann head, we have never been so back.
Max is one of the more relatable characters for my personal taste as he’s someone just grinding the mundane as an obsessive, observant and aspiring for things beyond his cab lifestyle until he’s shook by circumstances completely out of his control. His safety net which has gotten him no where and his picture showing his meditative dream that lies beyond the city evaporates thanks to one random passenger, or perhaps he can do something about it.
One night runs its course and every character shows how they deal with being just another flashing neon sign in Los Angeles despite the varying lifestyles of all these involved, most of their limitations overlap in strange ways. Love everything about this film but the two-hander performances from Cruise and Foxx is exceptional, helped greatly by the riveting dialogue.
Ruffalo pulls up playing an undercover detective in an all black fit complete with trench coat and nasty goatee + stache as the song “Rollin’ Crumblin’” is blasting its like Michael Mann continues to figure out things I want to see before I even know it. Add things like Audioslave hitting as the lone coyote passes through Los Angeles in the dead night is just incredible, can’t even try to explain it.
