Lost Highway
It’s been over a year so I had to fire this up and I think it’s almost my favorite Lynch, at least competing with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me which is such a singular experience that finds a way to elevate something SO already strange to begin while crushing the viewer. Lost Highway is really lockstep with any possible surrealist, psychological thriller that’s ever been made and somehow I become more connected with fever dream every time which is not the case with all his other of his works. The mood is indescribable and it only becomes more pronounced over the runtime with some of the most entrancing, enigmatic and off-putting things you’ll ever experience in a film. Getting that sensation that your mind is reeling as it tries to plays a bit of catch up but this is such an incredible look at identity and manipulation among about a million other things. There is this sensation that Lost Highway captures of deeply unsettling events and ideas actually rumbling beneath the surface it’s just a matter of time. Points during the entire first half contain moments where white noise becomes just as unrelenting as the silence. You can argue these dark issues are omnipresent in society but it’s people’s inability to address and communicate them that causes a spiral which can’t be corrected.
It’s even as if Fred’s apartment is an endless extension of corridors and once the trouble makes its way inside your home, it’s simply a matter of time. Like most of Lynch this is a true one of one experience that you couldn’t replicate if you tried. It’s hard to describe and even purposefully distancing at points but if and when this clicks into place for the viewer they’ll be long sequences, images and ideas that you’ll never remove from your mind. Despite the troubling and inexplicable nature of the much of the film, this is a deeply funny outing once you move past the real disturbing elements hiding right underneath. Mr. Eddy is one the best characters Lynch has ever created and he’s made so many memorable ones.
Rammstein needle drop hits like crack every time.
