The Thing
Opened my windows so I could feel the crisp October air and got paranoid with the fellas, perfection all around. The creature design is some of the most metal stuff ever conjured and they matched its intensity lockstep with the practical effects. The cowboy hat in Antarctica is just too good, Carpenter truly was the best at knowing how to use Kurt Russell to his fullest ability of posturing like the baddest man around town amongst numerous other things.
I love how in this everyone’s ultimate final card when being threatened with death is “well go ahead and kill me then buddy”. Every time the response is like, “alright I won’t right now but I got my eye on you pal” it’s the best ever. Almost everyone featured gets at least one moment or line where they’re allowed to dial it up which I wish was allowed more. Sometimes some over acting is fantastic but that’s just me, I’d be doing way more outrageous stuff than this if I was experiencing these events in the most desolate and unforgiving place on earth. I love the ending more and more every time I see it, the calm acknowledgement that it’s over regardless, MacReady knew from the very start.
