Memento
First of all, go watch this. And then, if you haven’t seen it, go watch Fight Club.
Now, for the customary ramble.
Between this and Perfect Blue, been on a bit of an unreliable narrative streak. It’s also funny watching an early Nolan movie and seing a first iteration of the themes and storytelling tools that appear in his later movies. Questioning the trustworthiness of our senses, temporal non-linearity (bi-directional chronology even!).
This movie does such a good job at exploring the different dimensions of what it means not to be able to make new memories. It makes you, as a viewer, feel like you understand what’s happening, and then slowly but surely dissolves that notion, leaving you just as clueless as Leonard.
Guy Pearce was awesome in this and nice of the cast of the Matrix to join (Joe Pantoliano & Carrie Anne Moss were also great). Loved the soundtrack too. It was moody, mysterious, but then light at times, intensifying the feeling of ping ponging between hope and despair.
