Bo Burnham: Inside
Watching this again Im still confused why this was labeled as a comedy special because it’s so much more than that. Sure its funny and its filled with silly songs, but at its core its not really made to funny. Bo is confronting his anxiety and depression head on, and he’s literally getting naked for the world to see. Through each song you get another peak inside his mind and what he’s dealing with. He tackles some serious issues, and addressing it in funny ways helps himself and also the audience find joy while the world is falling apart. He really is literally trying to heal the world with comedy.
But what stuck with me most this time was just how technically impressive the whole thing is. Amazing songwriting aside, Bo Burnham is ridiculously talented. It’s part comedy, part documentary, part actual movie, and all-around impressive. This crazy cinematography, direction, lighting, and set design is so well done even without the fact he did it all in one singular room. He even utilized some aspect ratio changes. And look, I know Im not a film major, but I’ve watched enough movies where I know when there’s some technical genius going on. So like I said in the beginning: this isn’t a comedy special, this is some true genius right here
