First Reformed
Paul Schrader's masterpiece. Might be the best movie ever made
There is not a single second of this movie that doesn't work perfectly with everything else. No non-diegetic sound, the aspect ratio, the harsh cuts, the narration, the still camera (and the limited use of camera movement), the world building, the dream-like sequences that heighten the climax and address the insane tension built, the symbolism of our characters, all of it.
The camera moves with hope. As Toller rides his bike, we look up at the trees. When appropriate, we spin in a circle. The small wins.
It all comes together to tie together this tone, and WOW it is quite something. This is my third time watching First Reformed, and I can't believe I am still effected by this movie to this degree.
Climate change, faith, hope, despair and love. How we operate knowing how much of a tornado of darkness we're experiencing. First Reformed is an appropriately depressing movie that invites much needed discussion about how we approach life.
Another thing I really appreciate is that First Reformed addresses what I and (I hope, but at this point lol) most people feel about the state of our world right now by not being happy, or even hopeful. To Toller, the church is where he thrives in hope. One of the most crushing moments is when he learns how it has been funded this whole time. There is NO escaping capitalism, it's effects and the despair it brings. Still, hope MUST win. There is no other option, unless truly considering that other option, which our two men do.
Paul Schrader is working on a different level here, and I really think First Reformed is up there with the best American movies ever made that I've had the pleasure of watching.
Ethan Hawke might be dangling with best performance ever in my books. What an insane job he does.
LOVE, easily one of my favorites ever I will never stop thinking about this.
