Spring Breakers
With Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy, Korine uses reality and handheld cameras to tell compelling stories, so much with JDB that it got approved for Dogme 95 standards
WOW Spring Breakers is the opposite. Everything in this alludes the dreams. Character's names like Candy, Faith and Alien. "Pretend it's a video game, or like you're in a movie." The sunsets, the tone, the colors and everything else makes Spring Breakers such a dreamlike movie. It's one of those movies that transcends plot and narrative. It's up to the viewer, and I love it so much
Korine starts the film by using real spring breakers and real, low quality handhelds to portray what he wants. These are not even actors.
Korine also admitted that he shot the film primarily in anamorphic 35 mm in order to create distortion around the edges as a means to convey an otherworldy look (pulled this from an article by Ed Cameron if anyone cares)
With Spring Breakers, Korine indulges in something he denied for a while and executes it masterfully. This movie says so much, and it breaks all of the rules. Releasing over a decade ago, it, to obvious and purposeful extremes, is a perfect product of its time, and of its time to come
Some really great performances all around, and honestly some really smart casting decisions here. Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, two former Disney and child actor stars, take on these roles, and it is just so fitting. They do great as well, Gomez as the religious Faith and Hudgens as the opposite Candy. Franco is a moron, and to be honest does a good job at being one.
To no surprise, there is so much beautiful technique littered throughout this, especially with the use of color
What an incredible movie. Harmony Korine never fails. I cannot wait to watch this again. I've now seen 4 movies directed by him and all of them have turned out to be my some of my favorites of all time
