Obsession
I think the most interesting thing about this Monkey’s Paw dilemma is the fact that Bear is given so many opportunities to start trying to fix things. He should be fully aware from the helpline phone call that he’s not really with Nikki. During this call, he was presented with an “opportunity” to reverse the wish and he chose to bargain instead. When he was talking to Nikki after the party, he asked her to “act like Nikki,” not to be Nikki. It never occurred to him to care about Nikki’s agency or to take accountability, or even to properly acknowledge the real Nikki when she was directly talking to him. Instead of only being a tale of regret and being careful for what you wish for, this is a tale of forcing an ideal that doesn’t exist because of pure greed.
Obviously this is all incredibly surface level, but honestly I’m just trying to process this overwhelming and awesome movie. Shit was too terrifying though. Never watching it again.
