Memento
Mementos portrayal of revenge and grief is perhaps the most accurate and interesting seen in cinema.
Leonard has his life stolen, hijacked by the feelings that persist from that night.
The mundanity of life does very little to curb them.
It’s not like you don’t try to burn them, set ablaze to the past and your actions. Try to move on.
It’s never enough.
Guy Pearce is obviously great but man this time around I was absolutely startstruck by Joe Pantoliano and Carrie-Anna Moss (The matrix duo). Part of it is due to the perfect script from Nolan which is my favourite of his to date (Oppenheimer close behind) but the way the actors made every line sound like music was genuinely oscar worthy.
Back to the script, every line was so deeply layered, every character so well throughout, filled with complexities and real human behaviour. The Matrix duo both express there distain for Lenny at several points, taking advantage of his condition, but still help him and feel for him. They see glimmers of the man who once was. Someone trapped.
My favourite scenes of this film is the Sammy Jerkins flashbacks. Watching them knowing it’s actually Leonard’s life before his wife’s passing is perhaps the most devastating thing I’ve seen.
Sammy’s wife berating him for his condition, his inability to continue living a fulfilling life with her. He can’t do nothing but apologise and apologise for who is he. Once she’s gone, he’s all alone, with no purpose and no reason to live. And he can’t blame anyone but himself
This movie broke me at several points and it’s one of those films that while there have been many like it before and after its release. None of them hit like this one.
I wish Nolan went this personal again. Maybe one day
(Ps, only major flaw with his movie is the end credits song choice. Absolutely ruins the quiet and horrifying vibe of that incredible ending)
