Inception

A dream inside a dream inside a dream - multiple levels deep, 5 minutes in the real world can last anywhere from an hour up to a decade in dream time. Each person who goes under plays a specific role: architect, point man, forger, extractor, and chemist. When analyzing if you’re in a dream always start by asking yourself: How did you get here? You can also use your totem (dice, spinning top). Once you realize you’re under, the only way out is a kick or in some cases to die, but be cautious of limbo.  Not only is there a main plot including the task from Saito of tricking Fischer into braking up his father’s empire after his passing, but additionally the unfinished business between Cobb and Mal. Cobb tried inception on Mal first to help them escape from the dream world and back into reality. Now he wants to believe in multiple realities, but cannot as it is not safe and he needs to get back to their children. “You’re waiting for a train.” Even after she woke up, she continued to believe that world wasn’t real and that she had to die to escape the cycle. Cobb essentially killed his own wife even if he didn’t physically push her off the ledge of that building.  Multiple iconic scenes including outside the cafe when everything starts exploding, infinite staircase, Mr. Charles, anti-gravity hotel fight, the top spinning at the very end, and Cobb talking to Mal 4 dreams down. Not to mention one of the last scenes which leads into a slightly altered version of the first scene as a way to bring Saito back from limbo.  Here’s an analysis of the plot that I enjoyed: “The film's structure is a reflection of its thematic exploration of the blurred lines between reality and illusion. Nolan uses the dream levels to create a narrative labyrinth, inviting the audience to embark on a journey alongside the characters.” Non-linear structure that mirrors the dream state, the climax of the dream feels like it starts halfway through when the main dream initiates with multiple highs until the true climax of Cobb trying to save Mal.  Quotes: “True inspiration is impossible to fake”  “No idea is simple when you need to plant it inside someone else’s mind”  “Who would want to be stuck in a dream for 10 years?” “Depends on the dream” “As we go deeper into Fischer we go deeper into you (Cobb).”  "The dream has become their reality. Who are you to say otherwise?"
