Shutter Island
“If I was to sink my teeth into Your eye right now would you be able to stop me before I blinded you?”
“Give it a try.”
“That’s the spirit.”
“Can my violence conquer yours?”
I have never been more grateful for being able to watch a movie without having witnessed or heard spoilers beforehand. And I mean every word of that because this was absolutely mind blowing and I’m both embarrassed and dissapointed I did not watch this masterpiece of a movie earlier. Until the last 20 minutes, this movie felt like those dreams where you withstand the length of it, and you feel like you’re spiraling and you feel like you’re missing something, which is usually the case with people who don’t realize they’re in a dream.
Stay with me now.
The cinematography was utter genius , color being used as a psychological cue nearly always like cold blues and sickly greens for emotional numbness, control, repression and then warm, fiery colors that only appear in the dreams or imagined spaces which creates a divide between what’s real and what’s not. If you’re lucky you wont pick up on that divide and get to be shocked to you’re core though so it’s a win-win. I cannot stress hard enough how brilliant DiCaprio was in this movie. His facial expressions during every scene probably (especially in the lighthouse) were nothing less of exceptional. And of course, the love of my life Mark Ruffalo once again took my breath away. Far from being amazing, I find it hard to understand how an actor can act so many roles but can nearly always maintain that little core of warmth that shines through so much it’s it’s own genre at this point. Anyway this is a perfect starting point for anyone who wants to be immediately engaged as they start their Scorsese journey. Also, fun game idea with friends: slap the person to you’re right every time DiCaprio mentions he’s a *federall uues maaashall
