Smiling Friends
Charlie: Oh, man, it’s so refreshing to finally get a vacation and not have to think about Smiling Friends for two weeks.
Pim: What do you guys want to do first?
Allan: I vote we go see the big Jesus first.
Charlie: Um, Allan, I think you mean Christ the Redeemer, dude. [laughs]
Allan: Oops. [Chuckles] My mistake. I just think of it as the Big Jesus. [Charlie laughs]
[Allan laughs]
Charlie: Oh, my gosh.
[Glep babbling]
Pim: We can go to the beach too, Glep, don’t you worry. I know you want to see all those sexy Brazilian girls. [Charlie’s eyes and mouth open] [Allan smiles] [Glep blushes]
Charlie: Whoa, okay okay. Ooh, whoa.
Pim: Ooh, Glep. Glep.
Charlie: Alright, well, okay. Well, before we do any of that stuff, you guys want to go drop these bags off? I don’t – We don’t want to be lugging these around all day.
Allan: Oh, yeah. That’s a good idea. Which hotel were we at again?
Charlie: Yeah, Pim, which one are we staying at? Is it super close by or is it like a taxi drive away? Can we walk?
Pim: I don’t know. W-Why are you asking me?
Charlie: What do you mean? You’re the one that’s in charge of all the hotel stuff.
Pim: No, Allan was in charge of that.
Allan: Pim, I sent you a link on Messenger. You were supposed to book the hotel.
Pim: Wait, no, I could have sworn you said you booked that. I thought I was just booking the plane tickets.
Allan: Uh, no.
Charlie: Pim, are you messing around or did you seriously not book the hotel?
Pim: Why would I joke about that?
Charlie: I don’t know. That’s a--That’s a good question. I don't know.
[Many critters with luggage pass through the Smiling Friends.]
Allan: Alright, let’s -- [Woman makes a parrot-like noise.] Let’s get out of the way right here. [A blue critter resembling Bart Simpson passes by.] L-Let’s just figure this out over there.
Charlie: Before we get ahead of ourselves, before we freak out and get in a weird mood and start bickering at each other, I think the best thing to do is just to call the place and make sure that -- that you def-- you definitely didn’t book it because --
Pim: Yeah, sure.
Charlie: We just need to call first.
Pim: I mean, I can’t remember that I did. But I -- I might have. But I just really -- I thought you were doing that, Allan. I really --
Allan: No, Pim, that was you.
Charlie: Dude, you definitely said you were gonna do this.
Pim: I really -- Charlie, Charlie, I’m telling you right now, I cannot remember that. I really can’t. And I’ve got a good memory for that kind of stuff. I really thought Allan was booking the hotel and I was booking the flight.
Charlie: Dude, dude, dude -- [talking at the same time as Pim.]
Pim: I remember for a fact -- [talking at the same time as Charlie.] [indistinct talking]
Charlie: No, ‘cause I remember – [talking at the same time as Pim.] [indistinct talking]
Allan: Alright, let’s no-- Let’s just stop. Let’s not do this here. Let’s -- Let’s just sit over there. Let’s sit at that bar for a second and we can figure this out.
Pim: I’m just -- I just -- I just want to say I really can’t remember that.
Allan: Let’s just try to keep our cool.
Airport Waitress: Table.
Charlie: Oh, um?... Yeah, yeah. Table for -- Do you have four? Just like four?
Airport Waitress: Okay, a there’s a little bit of a wait, but I let you know when -- when one’s free, okay?
Charlie: Okay. Yeah, that’s -- that’s fine. That’s good. Yes.
Pim: Thank you. Okay.
Charlie: That works good. Thank you.
Pim: Oh, God. I was just gonna say --
Allan: Are we trying --
Pim: Oh, sorry.
Allan: No, you go ahead.
Pim: Well, I was just gonna say why don’t we just try booking, like, another hotel? Like, if -- if there wasn’t one booked, there’s other stuff in the area. [Charlie talks at the same time.]
Charlie: Just I-I-I was saying this a second ago -- The hotel should have been booked.
Allan: Yeah.
Charlie: If -- We should call to make sure that it wasn’t.
Pim: Yeah, if you want -- I’m fine to do that, but I can -- If you want, I can call.
Charlie: I was just gonna say can you call? Do you mind calling?
Pim: Yeah, I can -- I can call.
Charlie: Okay.
Pim: Um… [answers cell phone]
Charlie: By the way, what the hell, man? What’s going on? Is there, like, an event going on? There’s, like -- This place is super crowded. I was not expecting it. This is way more than what an airport should be.
Allan: It is pretty packed.
Pim: Yeah. Hi. I just wanted to check -- I -- I don’t think I would have done this, but you don’t have a reservation for Pim Pimling or, like, the Smiling Friends, do you? Yeah. Yep. P-I-M. Pim. Yeah. Ahh. Okay. Damn it. I thought so. Um, okay, well, is it okay if I can, like, book a hotel -- like a room for four or four rooms, rather? Oh, really? Okay. They’re all booked at capacity.
Charlie: Ahh.
Pim: Yeah. Okay. No, th-that’s alright. That’s okay. Well, thank you. Thank you very much. Okay. Bye-bye. Damn it. Yeah, they said-- They’re totally booked and we’re probably gonna have a hard time finding a place around here ‘cause it’s Mardi Gras right now so it’s super busy.
Charlie: Oh, Mardi Gras.
Allan: Mardi Gras.
Charlie: Okay, that makes sense. That makes sense.
Allan: I didn’t even know. I had no idea.
Charlie: I was gonna say, yeah, dude, dude, there’s -- did you guys notice it too, the amount of people?
Guy at Airport: Hello? I saw you -- I saw you from across the airport. And I’m just wondering if, like, you --
Charlie: Yeah?
Guy at Airport: Are you a tourist? Are you a t-- Are you a tourist?
Charlie: Yeah, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, we don’t really have the time to talk right now. We’re in the middle of figuring something out.
Guy at Airport: But you are a tourist? But are you a -- You are a --
Charlie: Yes, we’re tourists. Yes. We have everything figured out.
Guy at Airport: Do you -- Do you have any cash? Any cash with you? Cash.
Charlie: I’m not -- I’m not giving you -- I’m not giving you the answer to that, sir.
Pim: Sorry, we don’t have any cash.
Allan: -Sorry.
Guy at Airport: What about your --
Allan: We’re actually just in the middle of --
Charlie: Sir, we really need to be left alone right now, please.
Guy at Airport: Well, listen, you have a very good stay in Brazil, my friend. Alright? Brazil is a very good country. [leaves]
Charlie: Yes, it is. Yes, we love Brazil. Thank you. Dude, when he fcking [bleep] moved his arm, I thought he was gonna hit me. I thought he was gonna fcking [bleep] punch me.
Allan: I actually thought the same thing. I really did. I-I saw you flinch, too.
Charlie: He was fidgeting. He was, like, fidgeting with something in his pocket. I thought he was gonna, like, pull something out and, like, hit me.
Pim: I’ve heard there’s, like, bad stuff that happens in Brazil, too.
Charlie: Exactly. I’ve seen a lot of -- seen the fucking [bleep] videos of it.
Airport Waitress: Okay. The table is ready, okay?
Charlie: Oh, yep, thank you. Thank you.
Pim: Thank you. Great.
Charlie: Yes.
Pim: Great.
Airport Waitress: Can I get you something?
Pim: I just want a -- Can I get a glass of water? Can I just get a glass --
Charlie: Can I get a glass of water too?
Allan: Can we just -- Can we get water for the table, actually?
Airport Waitress: Yeah. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Here is some menus, say, for the food. I give you a little bit more time.
Charlie: Oh, thank you.
Airport Waitress: Okay?
Charlie: Yeah, actually, I don’t think we’re gonna be here that long. Can we just start off with, like, a little plate of flies? Just, like, a little --
Airport Waitress: Okay. Small fry. Yeah, okay.
Charlie: Yeah, just a side. Not, like, a big thing.
Airport Waitress: Yeah. Okay. I leave you just the menus, just in case.
Charlie: Yep, that’s perfect. We’ll just put it over here.
Allan: Thank you very much. Thank you.
Pim: [Sighs] Okay, um… You know what I was just thinking, because a lot of the people that would have come to Mardi Gras probably got, like, a cheap hotel, like a hostel thing, there’s a chance we can even go for, like, more of an expensive range hotel, because I -- I guarantee those ones wouldn’t be booked out.
Charlie: Look, I don’t want to shoot anything down from the get-go, but I just have a bad feeling, like, because I thought about that too --
Pim: Why?
Charlie: Because of the price, man. Those places are like -- They’re maybe not as expensive as something you get in America, but they’re definitely - they’re not cheap. I mean, how expe-- I guess, how expensive are you talking per night?
Pim: I don’t know. I have no -- I’m just thinking, you know, ‘cause, like, I’m just guessing those ones probably wouldn’t have even been booked. So, you know, probably -- probably like double or triple the amount.
Charlie: Dude. Man, I didn’t budget for that.
Allan: I only brought enough for like --
Charlie: I brought enough money -- I only have enough money for --
Allan: Yeah.
Charlie: For the couple days we’re supposed to be here.
Allan: Same. I didn’t think that we’re gonna go to an expensive hotel.
Pim: I’m just trying to think -- I’m just literally trying to think of options. I don’t know –
Charlie: I understand. I’m not shooting you down. I’m just saying I-I don’t have the money -- nobody -- nobody budgeted for that. We have to know that kind of stuff ahead of time. I was talking to Glep, I know for a fact he’s budgeting on this. Could you even go in on that kind of money?
Pim: I was even -- Well, I was just gonna say that maybe we could even just get The Boss to kind of, you know, pay for whatever, because it’s like -- we can see it as a business trip, like, for tax purposes. We could go to, like, an extensive place and maybe get him to pay.
Charlie: I feel bad roping The Boss into this. It’s not his -- it’s not his -- this is -- This is not his business, dude.
Pim: Charlie. I’m just trying to think of solutions.
[Charlie and Pim talk at the same time] I’m just -- Do you have any ideas? I get that -- But the thing is, it’s just annoying because I admit that I probably screwed up-- Stop, stop-- Wait, wait, wait. Don’t, don’t, don’t talk over me. Let me finish. Let me finish, let me finish. Don’t yell at me. Go ahead, go ahead.
Pim: I was saying I probably screwed up, but, you know --
Charlie: You did. You did screw up.
Pim: I admit to that. What you guys don’t realize is I-I admit I probably screwed up. I’m saying I do not remember that I had to book the motel.
Charlie: What do you keep bringing that up?
Pim: But what I’m saying now is I’m trying to figure out a solution. [Charlie talks at the same time.]
Charlie: That’s irrelevant.
Pim: And it seems like you guys are just, like, ganging up on me.
Allan: We’re not ganging up on you, dude.
Charlie: You’re throwing something --
[Airport Waitress arrives with glasses of water and a bowl of French fries.]
Allan: We’re trying to figure out a solution --
Airport Waitress: Okay, four waters and French fries.
Pim: Okay. Thank you. Yes.
Charlie: Yeah.
[Airport Waitress places a glass of water on the table.]
Charlie: French - French fries are right here, thank you.
[Airport Waitress places more glasses of water and a bowl of French fries on the table.]
Pim: Okay. I mean, I guess --
[Airport Waitress leaves]
Charlie: Alright, even if we don’t ask The Boss for money necessarily, it’d be good to maybe get some opinions from The Boss. He might have an idea.
Pim: I agree.
Allan: Yeah.
Pim: I definitely agree. I was gonna say that before, actually.
Charlie: Yeah, I think -- I think there’s no harm in it. Even if, you know, he can’t necessarily help us, he might give us a suggestion or an idea. He might -- He might know somebody here -- I know he’s got connections and stuff, so maybe --
Allan: I’ll call him. I can call him.
Charlie: Yeah, I was gonna say, do you mind? Cause my phone’s like super -- super low battery.
Allan: Yeah, I’ve got a little bit of battery left.
[Allan’s phone rings]
Allan: Um…
The Boss: Hello?
Allan: Hey, Mr. Boss, it’s Allan calling. I’m with Pim, Charlie, and Glep right now.
The Boss: Hey, guys.
Allan: Yeah. Hey, how’s it going?
Pim: Hey, Mr. Boss. It’s Pim here. We’re just calling because we’re in Brazil right now, and we kind of screwed up a little bit. [The others give him an annoyed look] At least I did. We don’t have a hotel, and we’re just wondering if you had any ideas of maybe, like, you know -- you know someone here that we can stay with or maybe something that we can do.
The Boss: Oh, geez, I don’t know.
Pim: Yeah.
The Boss: Wait, you guys don’t -- You guys don’t have a hotel?
Pim: No, no.
Charlie: We thought we did.
Pim: We thought we had one, but, um, like, we were gonna get another hotel, and I guess normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but right now it’s Mardi Gras here in Brazil. So just everywhere is booked. Everyone is fully blocked out. So -- which -- Yeah.
The Boss: Okay, um, well, shoot. Um, let me see. Let me see. [Sighs]
Charlie: If you can’t think of anything –
The Boss: You chose the worst time to go. You chose the worst time to go.
Charlie: No, we know.
Allan: We’ve already talked about that.
Pim: We can figure this out ourselves. We’re just wondering and obvious-- Yeah.
The Boss: Yeah, I don’t know. We’ll figure it out. We’ll figure it out.
Charlie: Thank you for --
Pim: Thank you, Mr. Boss.
Charlie: Thank you. It was good talking.
The Boss: See you.
Pim: I just want to say, like, genuinely, I am really, really sorry.
Charlie: I swear, man, yeah, it really is fine.
Allan: We’re not -- We’re not mad.
Charlie: We’re not mad, man.
Allan: Just a bad time to come, I think.
Charlie: Just a bad time in general. Yeah. And I think -- I don’t know. [sips water] I mean, this is just an idea, but I think there’s even reality where if the only option is for us to either spend a bunch of money on an expensive hotel, which we might not even get, I think the reality is it might just be worth it to -- to just fly back price-wise. I mean, what are the tickets gonna be relative –
Pim: I agree.
Charlie: I don’t have the money for it.
Pim: I was actually thinking the same thing. I was just thinking let’s just --
Charlie: Okay.
Pim: I just want to go back now, to be honest. Like, I think what we should do is we’ll go back and just we can plan a trip for the future. [Meanwhile, Glep eats a french fry.]
Charlie: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Pim: Let’s really fully get a plan. Get the hotel.
Charlie: Yes. We should just coordinate it together, like have a Google Doc or, like, a thing that we share with each other and then we –
Allan: That’s a good idea.
Charlie: Yeah, we literally just all add to it and, you know, and we put like checkmarks, Oh, you know, this one’s done. So it’s -- it’s less segmented and compartmentalized.
Allan: By the way, just really quick, the -- the next flight is in 45 minutes.
Charlie: 45 minutes. What time is it now?
Pim: Uh… 3 something?
Charlie: 3:15?
Pim: Yeah.
Charlie: Yeah, a little after 3:00. Okay, yeah, let’s -- I say we just go for that one. Let’s go and –
Pim: Let’s just do that. Let's just go back. Let’s go back.
Charlie: Alright. What terminal was it?
Pim: It was an experience. That was an experience. We learned, you know, what to do next time.
Charlie: Look… We did.
Allan: It’s alright, yeah. Let’s just go home. [gets out of chair.]
Charlie: [gets out of chair.] Yep. By the way, what travel was that flight?
Pim: I think it’s terminal 2. 2…
Allan: Terminal -- Yeah, 2, yeah.
Charlie: Alright. That’s only like 10 -- Okay, let’s go now. [leaves]
Pim: I might just go to the bathroom first.
Charlie: Alright.
Pim: It’s really -- I’ll be super quick. That’s fine.
[In the background, an airplane is about to crash into a mountain.]
[The credits play.]
