Superman
First superman movie i’ve ever liked but i have some mixed feelings.
Okay first of all: Superman is hot. Like “lift me out of my existential dread with one arm and a gentle Midwestern smile” hot. But more importantly!! this movie made me feel things?? Like, real emotional human things?? I wasn’t prepared. James Gunn took superman and fr said.. what if he wasn’t just an asshole in a cape, but actually a guy trying his absolute best to be kind in a world that rewards being cold and ironic? And it works.
Let’s talk visuals because Superman is a feast. Not the bloated, over saturated kind of feast where your eyes glaze over during the third hour of gray rubble. No.. this is clean, rich, almost painterly in places. The CGI looks good, but it also just feels intentional. Even the action sequences feel different. When he fights, there’s restraint. The destruction is stylized but not numbing, it means something. The CGI slows down not to show off, but to give you time to feel.
Okay sooo.. now i’m gonna sit here and contradict myself…
Let’s get this out of the way: yes, Superman made me feel things. Yes, it looks stunning. Yes, David Corenswet’s Superman is a golden retriever in human form. But this movie is a lot. It wants to be a heartfelt character study, a rebooted world builder, a morality play, a sci fi epic, and a soft reset of a dying cinematic universe.. all in one. And you can feel it strain under the weight sometimes.
The first hour? Beautiful. Thoughtful. Empathy forward. There’s a gorgeous restraint in how Gunn presents Superman.. not as a flawless icon, but as someone choosing goodness every day, even when it’s inconvenient. But by the third act, it starts to trip over its own ambition. Suddenly, we’re juggling five characters, two world ending threats, one legacy debate, and a very on the nose Lex Luthor monologue.
The CGI was mostly top tier. Flight sequences have this majestic, balletic quality, especially when paired with the score. But a few climactic scenes drift into the dreaded “Marvel blur” territory.. over lit, over processed, with backgrounds that feel like Zoom filters for the apocalypse. It’s never ugly, but it loses that grounded beauty the first half earned. And while Corenswet nails the earnestness, sometimes the script forgets to let him be a person. We see Superman caring, helping, listening.. but we don’t always see him wrestling with those choices at all or deeply. It’s all shown, but rarely sat with. The movie gestures at nuance but rushes to the next cameo or reveal before it can really sink in.
Still, for all its overreach, it means well... In a landscape of ironic heroes and punchline powered drama, Gunn gives us a Superman who leads with kindness. And even if the film can’t always keep pace with its ideals, the fact that it tries? That matters.
Overall, a good film about what it means to be a good person when it’d be so much easier not to be. This Superman isn’t just about saving the day, he’s about choosing kindness, even when the world is cruel and cynical and loud. It wrestled with the idea of legacy a lot. Not just the cape and the symbol, but what kind of person you decide to be when the world is watching (or when it’s not). Corenswet brings such softness to the role. He’s not cold or distant.. he’s just.. awkward, dorky, deeply good. And not in a cheesy way. In a believable way. It doesn’t treat empathy as a weakness, it treats it as the point. It isn’t a movie about how hard Superman can punch. It’s about how hard he doesn’t. About how much effort it takes to stay soft in a world that keeps daring you to be cruel.
and yes kyle, i gave it a 9/10.. BECAUSE I LIKED IT and it was still GOOD and the only DC movie i think ive ever been bothered to like.. 😔 hater
