Nosferatu
Besides Alien romulus, this was my most anticipated movie of 2024, and my God did it not disappoint! It may be a but of recency bias but this may be the best of that's come out this year.
Eggers was able to capture the gothic Germany vibes so fucking well in the film that it was practically palpable. This whole movie was just a dark and depressing vibe and I was enthralled by it!
Eggers knows how to play with lighting so incredibly well with so much as a candle illuminating a silhouette or casting a shadow upon a wall. Speaking of shadows, the use of them throughout the movie was done so well to illustrate orloks powers so well!
Orloks design was so fucking creepy and different from the iconic design of the original, but different in a good way. The new design definitely stands out from the rest and aligns well with Eggers vision for the film.
Lilly-Rose Depp delivers one of the best performances of the year and I honestly hope she wins the Oscar for this performance! The was always something so unnerving about her character that she was able to bring to light at the snap of a finger so well!.
The practical effects are always the fucking best and it's no exception here, from the beautiful set design inside the castles, to the streets of Germany, and finally to beautiful effects on Bill Skarsgard, making him completely unrecognizable as Count Orlok!
The ending of the film is so beautiful with everything wrapping up so nicely and a final shot and monologue from the great Willem Dafoe that felt so poetic.
Also can we talk about how this is Willem Dafoes FOURTH performance of the year. The man is a national treasure who simply does not stop working and I absolutely adore him
I genuinely loved this movie and was teetering between a 4 1/2 and a 5. I think I'm going to give the film a 5 because I do genuinely belive it deserves that rating but also because my friend luke who I decided to see the movie with said it was more like a 4 because he found the film to not be scary. The film I will say isn't necessarily scary in the typical sense but has a more dread filled and haunting atmosphere which serves in place of being in your face scary. Luke agreed with this sentiment and still decided on a 4 which while good, I think massively undersells the movie. This movie is fantastic and should be the film you see over the winter holiday season!
