The Florida Project
God fucking damn it, I put this on at around 11 because I needed something to unwind to and I thought this was going to be one of those movies where yes it has its sad points that hits you in the feels but in the end it all turns out right, I DIDN'T EXPECT TO BE FUCKING BALLING MY EYES OUT ON MY COUCH AT 1 A.M.! This is my first sean baker film and this did nothing but tell me I need to watch more of his films. The slice of life genre is one of my personal favorites and this is probably one of the best I've ever seen. The beautiful colors of this film feel like they were taken straight from a child's memory with its popping colors! The cinematography was great and did a great job of portraying a child's point of view throughout all of these crazy events. Speaking of child, these performances from all the kids were fantastic, I felt like I was looking into my own memories arguing with friends over who did something better and making up stuff to put yourself alive, the scene where the kids are spitting on the car and one of them said they got 100 points instead of only 5 or something like that reminded me of when my neighbor and I were playing in his backyard and he would say he was an immortal cat and could eat the bullets I shot at him so therefor he wasn't dead, just stupid kid banter like that is captured so perfectly in this film, and the way the kids keep using swear words incorrectly had me laughing the entire time! I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out Sean baker just told the kids to have fun and then recorded them for a few weeks! Also the performances from Bria Vinatie and Willem Dafoe are phenomenal as well, I'm starting to understand why Willem Dafoe is my most watched actor, he's quite literally perfect in everything with this probably being one of his best performances! This film hit especially close to home with the kids blocking out some of the terrible shit going on around them and just living life which while I definitely didn't go through as much crap as they did in this, I do relate to. This is definitely a perfect film in every way and I highly recommend you check this one out!
