Asteroid City
i’m coming away from this really loving it and still knowing that it needs another watch. i did not know about the theater as prof the story going into it, which i think was intentional based on the trailers, but it’s incredible that no one spoiled it for me. i found all of the scenes about the film being a play to be excellent in providing information that really enriched the experience of just watching the “play.” the workshopping that we get to see in those moments adds richness because we get to understand given circumstances for these characters in a way that is so different than anything i’ve ever seen.
even with those moments, the breaking of the fourth wall never disrupted the main story, which is honestly impressive. all of the moments between the characters still felt real and deserved even though i knew it was fake, i was still invested. i think it functions like a play in that way, because the suspension of disbelief is so different in live theater.
