Mickey 17
It's sad when reality gets so bleak satire is hardly even satire. I live in Florida and needles to say the theater was DEAD SILENT when credits rolled– I wonder if some people felt attacked?
On to the movie itself though.
- Pattinson's performance blew me away. I have no idea what this man's voice actually sounds like, or what his personality is. He totally disappears into the character, and Mickey 17 and 18 were identifiable because of it the entire movie.
- I adore that Mickey and Nasha actually loved each other. It wasn't just sexual, they were soulmates, who stood by each other and understood and comforted and supported each other. I'm so glad the movie didn't have him cheat on her. Also her saying both Mickeys are HER Mickeys? Obsessed. Love LOVE a black woman actually staying with the main guy and getting her happy ending.
- Ruffalo's character killed me. All the parallels to a certain real life political figure are so heavy handed but it works because this is exactly how ridiculous he actually is. The pointing gesture, the graze to the cheek, the speech patterns, all of it (and the egregious fake teeth def helped further give the ick lol). On-point from the ties between church and state, to the absolute joke of an ego-show.
- I really liked that the scientists weren't evil. Lacking a backbone, sure. Incompetent, sometimes. But they weren't cartoon villains they were, for the most part, people who actually did just want to explore and learn (even if it got really unethical).
- they used the Wilhelm Scream. I LOVE the Wilhelm Scream.
I wouldn't say this movie was funny at all, but I would say there is a lot that's amusing and creates a super enjoyable balance with the drama, suspense, and action parts. The plot, script, sets, acting, and even narration was all amazing. It was entertaining, yet grounded and heartfelt. It feels like if Don't Look Up was less comedy and more artsy (not to diss Don't Look Up, I also enjoyed that one). Def glad I saw this one in theaters.
