Anora
If you think this movie didn’t tell us anything about Anora you’re wrong. She’s a granddaughter, a daughter, and a sister. She’s a stripper, an exotic dancer, a prostitute, an escort, a “night butterfly”. She lives with her sister in nyc and she forgot to pick up the milk from the store like her sister asked her to. She works hard even though she’s tired. She makes the men that pay her sit on their hands so they can’t touch her. She’s aware of the harm that can be enacted on her and can defend herself well. But sometimes she breaks her own rules because she trusts the person or maybe it’s because she wants some extra money. The final scene revealed that she sees the situation as transactional. She’s confused and hurt about everything that happened to her within the last 48 hours. Did Ivan even like her? Did he intend to ever have a marriage with her? Why did Igor give her the ring back? Why does Igor even care? Should she thank him? How should she thank him? Why is he trying to kiss her? Can she cry? Is it okay to cry?
She was so desperate to climb the social ladder she married an immature, wealthy, indulgent, 21 year old Russian kid. She craved a fairytale, even if she didn’t truly believe in it.
