Kanawa

So I rewatched this last night and I let it stew in my brain for a couple of hours , and I have got some things to say! First off this is undeniably a MASTERPIECE. Such a surreal fever dream with beautiful imagery and cast to boot! My interpretation:  To start this is based off the noh drama of the same name and obviously Shindo played with it to match the modern times but I feel like he kept the essence of the source material perfectly! The middle aged woman didn’t actually turn into a demon per se but I feel like it’s a metaphor, that’s how I view it. It’s a metaphor for female rage , how she wants to get fiery revenge for her husbands adultery so her anger turned her into a “demon” .  Some people when they will first watch this film they may clutch their pearls and wonder what the hell they’re watching but it deserves a second chance , an open mind and your upmost devotion. Kaneto Shindo you absolute mastermind!
