Hellraiser
3 stars? What the hell was I thinking?
Oh what sights I've been shown. Simply immaculate. Granted, I've become massive fan of Clive Barker' since my first viewing, so I'm certainly very biased (Candyman is another one of my favorite horror movies,) but I ADORED every second of this. It perfectly balanced being entertaining and impressive from a filmmaking standpoint while also showing one of the most depraved, carnal, boiled down depictions of the human spirit, another thing I simply fell in love with about Candyman. It dissects humanity's desire for more and how damaging it can be to those around us in a way only Barker could. It shows us humanity's gory insides and questions "God has turned his back on us, hasn't he?" This film might have my single favorite use of practical effects, and Frank's awakening is one of my favorite scenes in all of horror.
I don't have as much to say as I did with something like Candyman, but I almost enjoyed it as much. A delightfully depraved yet ever entertaining capsule of 80's horror. I'd love to go into it more, but there are people who have said what I'd say much better. I'll check out the sequel tomorrow. I'm glad they kept the series at two!
