Interstellar
On the occassion of it's IMAX re-release and it not being available in Indian IMAX's, I had to log in a rewatch to process my hate for Nolan fans better.
Yes great technical detail, yes he predicted what the black hole might look like, yes the docking sequence is absolutely amazing. But it feels like you spend too much time thinking about the details and marvel about it, leaving the emotional core of the film. The father-daughter emotion is forgotten, the wonderful dynamic between them is forgotten, the foreshadowing goes unnoticed. You spend too much time analyzing the physics you forgot to take in what the film wanted to make you feel. And the philosophical dilemmas it presents to you and the curiosity Cooper pushes for are not even noticed, let alone remembered.
And the people who consider themselves "smart" because they understood a Nolan film - thingari sannasullara. Nolan writes a big chunk of dialogue explaining the concept, and then simplifies it in one sentence. You don't need physics to "understand" the film. It is explained to you, the stakes are explained every single time.
Anyway, in my journey of hating on Nolan's fans who think they are superior to others because they "understand" his films, I have become a different animal but the same beast.
Shame on me.
