Interstellar
EPIC. How the hell do you even go about writing something like this? It’s generational stuff. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this is one of the defining movies of this era. There are basically zero space sci-fi epics that manages to capture this level of scope and depth of storytelling except for 2001 but that’s just on another level so I’m not even going to bother comparing them. Just a massive achievement in filmmaking and probably will go down as Nolan’s biggest accomplishment in his filmography, which is saying a lot because this guy has bangers. This thing is just next level man, not only is it ginormous, it has also got a great deal of emotion and heart at the centre of it that brings life to an already fantastic story. This is probably McConaugheys most impressive performance, he is an absolute wreck for most of the film but he holds it so well and it’s such a hard hitting character journey that he goes on and brings so much humanity to the story. I can’t even imagine how long it took for Nolan to figure out the ins and outs of this thing because it goes to so many different places that are overwhelming, sad and awe inspiring. One of Nolan’s best looking movies too, some truly magnificent moments both visually and thematically. So many phenomenal scenes. This actually looks like it was filmed in space it’s that good. Can’t talk about this without talking about the score, what the hell. Simply beautiful. Really just pushes the boundaries of what we expect from a blockbuster and using the infinite possibilities that the sci-fi genre can bring while also feeling totally tangible and grounded. Masterclass all round. What a film man.
