Nope
There's a feeling of anticipation before seeing a big blockbuster spectacle. As the lights dim and your eyes haven't fully adjusted it's as if the only thing in your vision is the blue shine of the screen as the trailers or studio logos pop up. Today as those lights went down and the last few trailers started I saw the trailer for Jaws. Not a new movie but a movie which is a perfect header for Nope. While watching the spectacle that Peele has created I realized that for the first time in a long while I was watching a movie that managed to instill that same feeling Jaws did in 1975. The feeling of aw that can't be pinned into a simple genre like horror, comedy, or action. It's a full experience where you'll be waiting on the edge of your seat to see the next perfectly crafted scene. Finally, when those lights come back up, and you come out the other side, the film transcends just being a movie and you come out of it feeling creatively refreshed. If it sounds like I'm just doing the Nicole Kidman AMC ad you'd be half right but I believe what I've said. Movies like Nope prove that the blockbuster isn't dead. They show why it's good to invest in these types of fresh ideas because even if they aren't all hits some of them can be incredibly special.
In short, go see Nope. It's probably Peele's best movie and maybe the best movie of this year.
