Hamnet
I sat down in cinemas today not knowing what to expect also had a feeling that this wouldn’t be for me but oh boy I was totally wrong.
This was a heartbreaking masterpiece. I’ll be honest I’ve not dipped into much Shakespeare and literature but oh god this was phenomenal the direction and the work from Chole Zhao is phenomenal.
It really just is incredible how much we learn and how much this film makes us care for the characters and there story because that first half was a masterpiece it made us see how close these characters were to one another and the beliefs of Agnes’s characters and the worries she had about everything. Then that second half starts and you’re straight into an emotional wreck of how dark and sad this story truly is. I’m a sucker for the score and the sound design in this film it builds emotion and tension and prepares you for the rollercoaster your about to go on.
The acting is phenomenal all throughout and I’ll say Paul Mescal was snubbed for a supporting actor nomination. I’m excited to see Jacobi Jupe in more films because at that young age he’s fantastic. Then omg the fantastic performance from Jessie Buckley is a guaranteed Oscar performance and she will without a doubt win because the utter emotion she poured into this film is incredible, especially after she witnesses Hamnet pass, how we get that deafening silence straight into emotion, grief, despair of screams and crying.
I love the final scenes at Shakespeares theatre it’s filled with acceptance from William to Agnes and how they are sharing this experience with the world and how Hamnet will live on and not be forgotten.
