First Reformed
I don't know what to say. What if believing in what is right is unbearable? I don't know, and this film doesn't tell me either. But it did pose the question. This is one of the bleakest and most horrifying movies I have seen. A man being consumed by righteousness giving up in the end, because he can no longer bear that others do not share this vision. Ethan Hawke is absolutely brilliant, the dialogue is brilliant, and the way it works with the still images makes every question the movie asks linger for a long time. I had chills during the last half-hour, basically. It challenges me and my way of thinking in just the right ways. Just a stupidly good movie that asks some very profound questions that need to be asked now more than ever.
