Ran
Ran. Directed, edited and co-written by Akira Kurosawa. Cinematography by Takao Saitō; in collaboration with Asakazu Nakai and Shoji Ueda. Ran is a masterpiece, like Seven Samurai every frame is crafted so thoughtfully and purposefully. Seeing Kurosawa in colour is nothing but spectacular. The colour contrast between the gray castles and the dark ground and skies to the vibrant red armour and the flaming fires blazing out the castles is beautiful. The scene where Hidetora is coming out of the castle and the armies of Jiro and Taro are split in the middle while the castle is burning to ashes is probably the most visually stunning scenes I have ever seen; and this film is filled with gorgeous visuals like it. There are shots in this movie that are so incredibly well composed that I honestly couldn’t believe it. It’s very cynical, nihilistic and brutal, filled with epic large battles and beautiful Japanese landscapes throughout the film and the locations are so perfect.
