Wicked
i practically grew up in oz. every weekend i spent the night at my grandparents’ house, and i would watch the wizard of oz, because my grandma adored it. she still has entire shelves dedicated to memorabilia; it’s just something that shaped me. oz was my magical faraway place that i longed so deeply to go to. wicked was my very first musical. the first one i ever saw in person. i quickly became obsessed with it, keeping the playbill from that local theater. when i went to new york for the first time, i was promise that i could see a broadway show. i chose wicked over everything else. i had a desperate need to feel that magic again. it was probably the best day of my life. now, seeing oz on the big screen again, i feel the magic just as i did when i was three, then thirteen, then fifteen, and now almost eighteen. it was as if they took the oz in my mind and put it right in front of me. it was gorgeous. the songs were perfect. the characters were alluring. i had never in my life wanted to run right into a movie screen so badly before. there never was a story more magical but also grounded, more over-the-top and subtle. the wicked movie captured oz with a brilliance i never expected to see from it. i need to see this again and again and again and keep feeling the magic because this is absolutely timeless.
