Superman
It's been a while since I was this excited for a movie. I've fan casted David Corenswet as Clark and Nicholas Hoult as Lex for years, so seeing that actually come to fruition was pretty awesome. Literally the first thing I thought when I saw David for the first time (in The Politician) was that he looked like Superman. And then I see it's a live action Superman with KRYPTO THE DOG???? Guys I love Krypto. And THE James Gunn is directing. I'm so happy he's been doing more DC lately.
So needless to say, I went into this with incredibly high expectations. And I'm very happy to report they were beyond surpassed.
The first thing I need to talk about is David as Superman. David IS Clark Kent. He does such a great job as both Clark and Superman, they're obviously the same person but you can see why people believe they're different. (I'm ignoring the hypno glasses. That was literally the only thing I disliked in this movie. I'm choosing to believe it was ragebait because everyone hated it in the comics, it is infinitely funnier to believe that no one recognizes Superman when he has glasses on. Like it's stupid but so is a little farmboy flying around with laser eyes and an alien dog.)
Lex Luthor was sooo cunty you guys, I actually love Nicholas Hoult so bad. Like ever since Warm Bodies he's been pookie but wow he's just so excellent. It's low-key giving brat. I love my Lex obsessed with Superman. Also the scene where he threatens to kill Clark was so fucking funny. And the emotion he gave at the end when his entire life falls apart? Chef's kiss. This Lex feels like such a modern villain, a Trump-Musk hybrid (but like, if they slayed) and I especially thought it was interesting how his prison wasn't just people like Superman, it was also his exes and anyone who wronged him in anyway. And the fact that he didn't get in trouble for that? So 2025 coded.
Lois was another great part of the movie. She was an icon and such a good fucking journalist, we have no choice but to stan.
I also have to shout out Eve because I loved her so bad. I rolled my eyes when she first showed up because I was just like "oh okay, boring ass criticism of selfies and social media," and then it turns out she masterminded the whole thing and was actually taking selfies to expose Lex??? Oh she slayed.
And that ending scene bro. Ripped my heart out of my chest in the best way. The Kents are such an instrumental part of who Clark is, so if they don't have a relevant role in a Superman movie, it doesn't genuinely feel like Superman. The end showed all of Clark's humanness so intensely, and the part where Jonathan lifts baby Clark up in the Superman pose is genuinely one of my favorite scenes in cinema.
There is so much to say about this movie, but I'm already making plans to rewatch. Adding to Letterbox's top 4 rn.
