Bo Burnham: Inside
this altered my brain chemistry in 2021. i hadn't rewatched it since (although i haven't stopped listening to the music since it was released), so i just thought, why not revisit it two years later?
guess what? it's just as good as it was then.
i understand that this isn't a perfect piece of media. i get that. it's a little corny in a way that only millennials are, and i can definitely agree that it contains one very limited view of a universal experience. HOWEVER, i need people who rate inside low on this app to understand that these flaws are naturally going to happen because this film is self-indulgent, and it's self-indulgent for a reason. it's almost like... that's the whole point. bo never claimed to be representing every human being ever when creating this film, so i don't know why people act like he did. it was always supposed to be documentation of bo's personal quarantine experience mixed with bits of his comedy. he delivers exactly this, and although, yes, he does so with bouts of universality, it doesn't mean that HIS art is supposed to be reflective of YOU.
inside is beautiful because bo opened himself up in an incredibly raw way. he showed a side of himself that many people wouldn't dare to show others. if he wants to be satirical, or artsy, or even "too self-aware" at times in his VERY personal piece of art, who are we to judge? it's his mind on display here, not ours, and i believe that his mind is a pretty special one, regardless of how you feel about him as a person.
(speaking of his mind... bo undeniably has one of the best musical minds of our generation, and i'm tired of us pretending that he doesn't. love or hate his comedy if you want, but the man can write songs)
