Millennium Mambo
I love the cinematography , there are so many standout scenes in the film that on their own express so much , the opening scene is beautiful , the roads in Yubari are so full of character , but when you weave it all together the film really comes apart , we're not actually shown Vicky's emotional state , we're led away from questioning it , we assume it's terrible from all the drinking and smoking + the talk with Jack but it's never really expressed , I mean say you have been with someone since you were 16 , abusive , manipulating generally a terrible person , is the sense of familiarity making you go back to him? What was different the last time they broke up? Was it Jack? Was it the arbitrary limit of 500.000 she had set? I mean the film has so much potential but it feels deliberately unexplored , and I think that's the point , there are no fast cuts , no sudden camera movements , the centering on the characters is always a little off , at times the movie is about nothing and I feel that escape is what draws you in, pretty good.
