Thief
Right up there with both Manhunter and Heat. Michael Mann is quickly becoming one of my favourites. I adore the way he directs and how he commands attention of the screen. You instantly are aware you’re in a Mann film - the well-lit night backdrops, the energetic synth-score, how he frames and moves the camera. No one does a crime thriller quite like Mann.
Caan is terrific given the opportunity to lead. Unhinged just enough to remain likeable but also demand respect for his over-looming threat. Charismatic yet cunning. Dangerous yet clever.
First act and third act are both absolutely impeccable. Without a single flaw providing a thrilling opening and a worthwhile conclusion.
