Obsession
I think it’s wild how I never even saw a single trailer for this movie. The movie and Inde Navarette specifically just randomly flooded my timeline one day😭tbf she’s truly incredible in this film and the promotional material did a great job of making you think it was just a random girl who is obsessed and evil, but it’s so much more sinister than that
Bear is the villain of the story and the whole movie could’ve played out differently if he just told her the truth about his feelings. I had a discussion with my friend about whether or not they would’ve explored things if he spoke up in the car scene, and I thought no but also yes in a sense because Nikki seemed slightly annoyed when he said no, even though every indication beforehand pointed to her not having those feelings. And in my mind she was annoyed/disappointed with his answer because she wanted to see or at least believe that if he could be the man to provide the kind of love that she was seeking to move forward with writing. I mean I think the line in the car about the difference between a romance and a love story is so indicative of who they are as people, and shows just how much Bear idealised Nikki in his mind, in contrast with Nikki having a more ground view of love. When wish Nikki started acting crazy he told her to “just be Nikki” but the version of Nikki he has in his head isn’t the real version anyway.
This brother had so many opportunities to put an end to his situation. Ngl I would’ve been so heated if my life was on the line and my friend wished for a billion dollars. But you’re telling me Ian is the only person you could’ve gone to to undo the wish? I mean maybe he was because in the opening scene Bear mentioned Nikki was the only one who was nice to him when he first moved there, and he’s a loser so I don’t imagine he has that many friends. Even during the dinner scene when he found out wish Nikki lied about her dad’s cancer, he still continued the relationship and said it doesn’t matter. Of course at this point he knew damn well the wish worked on her but he just didn’t care. The real Nikki popped out like 5 times, and even when he spoke directly to him, he still stayed and did nothing.
I thought Curry Baker’s use of light and the shadows were amazing, and I loved the glare Nikki had in her eyes in certain scenes that almost gave her a supernatural but still grounded look. Speaking of, I’m so glad they didn’t turn wish Nikki into a slenderman/coraline type of demon from hell with claws or sharp teeth with a splitting jaw. Kept the story more grounded but I was still genuinely terrified for a lot of the movie, just jumping and gasping for an hour and a half.
The score is crazy good. It’s so haunting and sinister that it indicates something is very clearly off, but it has a somber tone to it because the story is inherently sad imo. If you haven’t listened to the soundtrack yet, you have to load that up.
Also, the music shop owner (Sarah’s dad) must’ve been sick to his stomach. He lost his daughter, and ALL his workers in the space of a couple of weeks😫
