Squid Game

!! this is a review for s3 !! (i’ll talk about the series as a whole later) to be so honest, season three was a disappointment. there are many things i would point out, yet i realize it was still great, but unfortunately it didn’t top season one - it didn’t even try.  i won’t spoil anything because i realize a lot of you haven’t seen the new season yet and i’d just hate to be that person. it was six episodes, each more or less an hour long, yet i feel like almost nothing happened? the last two seasons i kind of didn’t get to develop any deep emotional attachment to the characters and i feel like it’s such a shame because there was so much potential.  i just feel like many scenes and moments, especially near the end, could’ve been made more dramatically and emotionally. there were huge emotional skips throughout the whole season. one second i just wanted to let a deep moment sink in but i didn’t even get to cry as i was thrown immediately back into the plot. i feel like the idea they had and wanted to interpret was good enough, but they could work around it and make it better.  these last two seasons just felt forced and rushed - and they were. hwang dong-hyuk had said it himself: there was only meant to be one season, and the rest was created just because of netflix and the audience’s demand. and i feel it could’ve just stopped after the first season and we wouldn’t be short of anything else.  but i couldn’t write this without not bringing up lee jung-jae’s performance which stood out to me this season (since i was really looking for something really positive).  overall, season one was and is my all time favorite. it ties me with a specific period of my life i like to look back on. i still remember every frame, every character and their deaths, and it’s a piece of media that will forever stay in my heart and mind, something i won’t ever forget.  i’m going to unite season two and season three and take it as one as it follows a single storyline. this one wasn’t as nice, things felt plastered on, but i still found myself getting lost in it and binge watching it breathless. season one: 5 stars season two: 4 stars season three: 3.5 stars overall squid game rating: 4 stars i wish it had ended after the first one.
