Ran
In his Poetics, Aristotle states that spectacle is the least important component of tragedy, plot on the other hand has primacy. In Akira Kurosawa’s Ran, spectacle and plot are held on equally great pedestals.
Ran’s visuals are nothing short of incredible, both the colour and the scale are breathtaking. Frames from this film look like regal handscrolls.
What is most striking however is how red the blood runs, how vibrant the fire burns, how lust of power brings violence, how rejection of love brings end.
And in the end we are left with nothing but chaos. Ran.
