Demolition
"I’m starting to notice things I never saw before. maybe I saw them. I just wasn't paying attention. for some reason, everything has become a metaphor."
The movie doesn’t try to impress its audience with crazy camera shots or an incredible score but it does steal ones breath with its acting:
Jake Gyllenhaal plays the role of investment banker Davis Mitchell who seems almost completely unbothered about the death of his wife and wants to "demolish" everything thats broken in order to repair it. Jake delivers this perfectly.
In my opinion the second half of the movie is what gives the movie its charm,
I think It displays Davis’ character growth, him stepping away from his (self) destructive behaviour and bonding with chris. Its also here the precedent is set of first having to destroy something before being able to build something new, for example how he is only able to bond with Chris and Karen after cutting ties with Phil and his work. It may seem unwise to say hes stepping away from destruction when he literally tears down his house, but finally davis isnt alone anymore, he has found the other half of his eaten heart in Chris. I also like to imagine when Davis destroyed the house with Chris and found the ultrasound image he imagined having a son like Chris.
