Squid Game
Now I’m gonna be honest. I think the ending of season 3 was great and we aren’t appreciative of it.
Okay so lets be honest, the show got worse as it went on. Season 1 was incredible season 2 was strong as fuck, and season 3 was… well it happened, I wont pretend to dislike season 3 because I do like it. But I also absolutely understand why someone might not.
My understanding of Squid game is that it’s about the how money decides someone’s life, the length people will go for just to get money, how people like this get taken advantage of, and how it wont end.
Season 1
If you look at Season 1 you see that people sit there getting slapped for hours to get £50 or $70. Now the worst thing about it is that people look at that and think they would also do that. I would to. But to me it’s showing a person humiliating themself for money. People can look at this desperate man failing a game and getting slapped over and over again. And when he wins he isn’t satisfied enough with that win and wants more. They get to the game where you see people eventually go completely corrupt for money. For example player 218 knows the main character and he had no care for killing him or others all because of issues in his life that can only be solved by money. Another important detail is that they actually leave the game completely, where after leaving they end up coming straight back because money was such an issue in their life they would either end it all just to try and get ultimate fortune possibly leaving behind their families for that, even the main character has a daughter and a mother, who is in desperate need of surgery, who he was willing to die just to give them some sort of future. Our main character is a man who sees past that and wants to put an end to this though. Another thing I have noticed in the show is that the frontman and the talking guards make an effort to inform the contestants that the game is fair even though they have 001 lose and still get to live as he is playing favourites as he is the frontman. This to me represents the idea that we are always told life’s not fair because some get advantages and some dont. The frontman telling you that it is fair to me represents governments telling their people how much they care for them meanwhile not caring the slightest about them. Meanwhile we all got to remember this is being used for as entertainment for the VIPs, who even have the nerve to bet on human lives just because they see them as below them.
Season 2
In season 2 it really goes into more depth on my opinion on the show. He tries to shut it down before it begins and ends up finding himself in the game again. He gets into red light green light and he saves as many as he can showing his knowledge of that game, this is important because it proves to the other players that he really has “played these games before”. In this season we get the new mechanic of a vote to end the game after each challenge and the money is split between all remaining players. They do this same vote over and over again and no matter how many people die they stay because they want more even though if they left they would still make some money. This season even brings in a pregnant woman who is given no sort of support by the game staff whatsoever showing more unfairness in the so called “fair” games. One game specifically that caught my eye was the merry go round game which was by far my favourite game. I think this one is more obvious than the others. The game works where you get into groups of a specific number of people then get in a door and lock it in time. Too many in one you die, not enough you die no room you die. This to me represents popularity and how if you haven’t got a high enough status people will cast you out. More examples of how the game dehumanises the poor people in the film.
I also while writing this kind of had a thought that maybe the fisherman who pretends to help the detective out on finding the Island where the games are being held could represent maybe the people who take people and trick them into trusting them only for it to be a lie.
The season ends with a massive revolution that works completely showing how if all the poor cane together they could overpower the rich easily but then its put to an end because among the poor desperate people. One of them turned out to be the highest there is.
*Season 3
*What I find crazy about this one is that after such a massive revolution you still have them put back to work in the games, with no impact whatsoever it all goes back to normal and they all just seem to take no notice of it. Next the pregnant woman gives birth. Now to me this baby represents innocence as they usually do in stories. And look how corrupt these people. Notice how little people care for this baby. To me it shows how innocence is not well taken in when all around it is corruption and selfishness. Once again you have 456 trying his hardest to not kill anyone. Trying to save what he can but prioritising the baby. I think the most important part is the end. 456 is the only one who speaks up about the issues with whats going on he tries his hardest to save everyone but naturally as he is the only one brave enough to stand he ends his own life to save the only player who had no greed throughout the entire show. The baby.
Okay so one last thing thats important is obviously the end when you see in America a man doing the same thing getting slapped publicly for losing a game all for money. This is incredible because no matter what went down with the revolution or 456 winning or dying. No matter what nothing would have changed as this isn’t just an issue with South Korea. Poverty, corruption, desperation and class is something that the whole world is suffering from and no matter what happens it won’t ever change.
This is why I think Squid Game is a masterpiece not because of the death or cool games or the weird doll. The message that it spreads.
