mother!
So here we are yet again. A film that people seem to be so split on. Something that when it is brought up will divide people immediately, maybe something akin to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, that film was rather messy and sloppy, this is finely crafted and perfectly reflects the movie Aronofsky wanted to make. And make the movie he did, because this was a rollercoaster of emotions and uneasiness, but I never would trade it in for anything less than the final product as it did incite true horror within my very being.
Mother! is the story of Jennifer Lawernce and Javier Bardem living in a house that Lawerence is building back up after it had been burnt down. They seem to live in a happy idyllic place, one that many of us wish we could have at this very moment. However, their lives begin to change when Ed Harris arrives and begins to make himself comfortable in their idyllic home. So chaos begins to rein in as the peaceful home becomes flooded in with people coming out of the woodwork. What will become of Lawerence and Bardem's household? Watch the film to find out.
For me, Aronosfky is a filmmaker who makes films with a vision, and operating in the system of Hollywood no less. I admire the man quite a bit because he shows you his vision and he isn't afraid to give you all the grizzly details. Mother! being his newest film shows to me how much he has progressed as a filmmaker since his debut Pi. Afronosky is able to make the camera move in ways that only he can do building on the foundation that he had set in Black Swan, where the camera is always moving in some way and is able to show so much yet have the ability to restrain himself when it is needed. Aronofsky has a tight control on set and it shows as everything is meticulously tuned to what he would call perfection. He is able to pull so much from his actors and get spectacular performances from everyone involved, Lawerence being the prime example as she is fearless and open in this roll truly giving everything she has. Bardem is able to play second fiddle in a way that isn't distracting but another addition into the symphony of extreme creativity. It is the way that the story unfolds and allows for interpretation on what it could exactly mean. Some people will walk out of this hating it from the very first frame and others will just be confused by it and think nothing more of it. I loved it. I loved it from the very first frame all the way to the end credits. Mother! is such a rarity and deserves to be praised as one of the best films of the year. Mother! is one film that will leave a lasting impression on you and linger with you for days causing you to want to see it again immediately after you have seen it. I am continually amazed by Aronofsky and his talent as both a screenwriter and director.
