Candyman
I am so happy I gave this a rewatch, as it reminded me why this is one of my favorite movies I've ever seen! It's a slasher unlike any other, removing any sign of cliches, executing its amazing premise flawlessly, with a thematically rich & thematically complex story. And how could I talk about this film without mentioning its ∞/10 score? Bernard Rose's directing is perfect, and it perfectly blends with the film's score; in fact, everything in this film blends together effortlessly. And Tony Todd, RIP, what an amazing voice and hypnotic portrayal of such an outstanding horror villain! The film's tone is perfect, and my favorite type of tone for a movie, hypnotic, gothically elegant, seductive and repulsive, dreamlike, as if it's putting a spell on you. This could have so easily been a dumb, cheesy slasher, but the elegant slow burn is exactly what makes it work so well. Unfortunately, the sequels eventually turn into a dumb, cheesy slasher. Words cannot describe my love for this movie; it's truly one of a kind. Unfortunately, the reboot couldn't even come close to matching this film in quality, story, tone, and pretty much everything, which is a shame since Nia DaCosta is clearly talented. I've seen this film multiple times, and this is probably the longest I've gone without seeing it, so I'm extremely glad that I saw it today, and it's one of those movies I love so much; it's kind of emotional rewatching it. Overall, this is...well, this is just perfection at its finest. RIP Tony Todd!
