OPAL
This isn’t Steven universe..
Anyways I just love how this movie does not try to explain itself. For someone watching with this in the background, Opal walks into a strange house and musical horror ensues. But with just little consideration to the dialogue, you’ll see it’s a tragedy! Especially Pearl’s mother, whose sedated and fragile, yet unpredictable state makes her the most terrifying of the characters— that and she reveals the truth to Opal and the audience. A theme that’s not explored a lot in media is invisibility and neglect, and never has it been shown more dramatically than here. Like literally her family is blind, blinded by beauty, or hopped up. And sadly, her mom (who I assume can see) tells Opal they are alike. Ouch. Overall, I enjoy the neatness of the plot development, specially the parallels of Opal feeling trapped in the burger house and longing to explore and in the end, Opal being literally trapped in her own house and imagining the beginning sequence for comfort. Jack stauber is a multi-talented genius! I’d love if he made a feature film.
