The Apprentice
Two of the strongest performances of the year for me. Sebastian Stan is more than deserving of that Oscar nomination for this but it was Jeremy Strong that stole the show for me. His portrayal of the brutal and ruthless mentorship that essentially created the Trump of today’s world is done so with such a chilling, intense presence.
I was a big fan of how the film looked and i thought the distinct visual style really immersed you into this gritty world of New York in the 70’s and 80’s. I also really liked how they ended the film. It felt like a powerful culmination of Donald Trump’s transformation under Cohn’s mentorship. The gradually building score in the final few scenes also really enhanced the climactic moments of the film as Trump reflects on the journey and his future ambitions.
It’s a biopic that doesn’t say much about the man but instead shows you enough of his manipulative, cutthroat actions to highlight that he’s clearly not a good person. It highlights his complete disregard for morals as he embraces the mentorship and ruthless strategies from Roy Cohn.
